A week after a man drove into and fire shots inside of a Michigan synagogue the county's sheriff's department is holding a press conference to provide more information about what happened and how the community will move forward.
Security of Temple Israel in in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit killed Ayman Ghazali, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Lebanon, after he rammed is car into the synagogue, hitting a security guard, and began shooting through his windshield.
No synagogue staff, teachers or any of the 140 children at the temple's early childhood center were injured, however, at least 63 first responders were hospitalized for smoke inhalation because the car Ayman Ghazali used caught fire. The security guard Ayman Ghazali is expected to be okay, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
Investigators found a large amount of commercial grade fireworks in the bed of Ayman Ghazali's truck, and several jugs of flammable liquid. They said he waited outside the temple for about two hours with his rifle before crashing into it.
The Department of Homeland Security said Ayman Ghazali came to the U.S. in 2011 on an IR1 immigrant visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen and granted citizenship in 2016.
He lived in a single-story brick home in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn Heights about 38 miles (61 kilometers) south of the synagogue, according to The Associated Press.
Bouchard is scheduled to hold a press conference on Thursday with faith leaders and law enforcement leaders to discuss the attack as well as how the community moves forward.
Temple Israel also released photos of damage to the synagogue from the attack to "take back control of (their) narrative" after the circulation of other videos and photos they say were made public without their blessing and caused considerable harm to the survivors.
We have chosen thus far not to make public photos of the devastation of our building," Temple Israel officials said in a Facebook post. "This week, several videos and photos have made their way into the media, which have caused considerable harm to the survivors of last week's attack. Today, we are sharing some images taken by our friend, Emily Elconin, to take back control of our narrative. We share these images because our community deserves to see our building through eyes of love, not through the lens of spectacle. This is our sacred space, and we will be the ones to tell its story."
