Peak District winter walk along the Monsal Trail, starting near The Anglers Rest and walking towards the famous Chee Dale stepping stones.
This family hike in the Peak District shows what the Monsal Trail is really like in winter conditions mud, tunnels, flooded crossings and all.
Lana and Abel traveled from Warrington Central to Urmston by train, meeting Charlotte, Fabian and Tobias and driving 60 minutes into the Peak District.
Parking was near The Anglers Rest (there is also a larger National Trust car park nearby). From there we walked south-west along the B6049 until joining the Monsal Trail.
Almost immediately we reached the historic 19th century lime kilns, once used to burn limestone from the quarry and transport it directly via railway. The industrial history along the Monsal Trail makes this one of the most unique Peak District walks.
We attempted the route to the stepping stones, but heavy winter mud and flooding made this a proper winter hike.
The Monsal Trail tunnels were cold and atmospheric, and the stepping stones were partially submerged.
