It is no secret that a red rose is a universal symbol of love. Red roses are the definitive sign of romance and enduring passion. They also convey respect and the inspired spirit of true love. Dead roses on the other hand, are not the sort of gift you want to receive. Dead Roses signify great sadness or that something (a heart) is broken or indicate the end of a relationship.
After thirty years together, it must have been one heck of a surprise when all she left him was a bouquet of dead roses!
