China and Turkmenistan have agreed to elevate ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership. Chinese President Xi Jinping said that natural gas cooperation is the cornerstone of relations between the two sides. Wang Yiwei, director of the Institute of International Affairs at Renmin University of China, says that natural gas from Turkmenistan is crucial to China's energy security the cooperation will help Turkmenistan diversify its trade and economic structure.
