Baie Comeau - A Ghostly Ship Emerges From Spooky Superior

Описание: Here is the Canadian laker Baie Comeau arriving in Superior, Wisconsin on the evening of September 21, 2025. She had been sitting at anchor waiting for her turn to load taconite pellets at the Burlington Northern dock (for delivery to Nanticoke, Ontario). Once the Paul R. Tregurtha left the BN dock and made her way onto Lake Superior (seen in an earlier video on this channel), the Baie Comeau picked up anchor and made her way in through the thick fog.

While ships in thick fog don't always make for the most detailed videos, the atmosphere is still fun to watch... and arguably even more fun to witness in person. I enjoy trying to get the first glimpse of the hull coming through the fog. It's like seeing a ghost ship... you're not quite sure you're seeing what you think you're seeing!

The handful of people that were there for the Tregurtha's departure all left the scene before the Baie Comeau arrived. So I had to serve as the sole greeting committee for the Comeau's arrival. I gave my best wave to the crew on deck and you can see them waving in return. I wasn't expecting a salute for this arrival, but hoped we might hear her sounding some fog warnings with her horn. While she did blast a few warnings when she picked up her anchor (long before she became visible), she stopped sounding her horn once she was within the Superior entrance.

The 740-foot Baie Comeau was launched in 2012 and entered service in 2013, having been christened alongside her fleet mate the Whitefish Bay at the same ceremony. She is one of the Trillium Class of freighters than operates for Canada Steamship Lines, designed for maximum fuel efficiency while minimizing impact to the environment. She is 5 percent more fuel efficient than CSL's previous class of ships, allowing her to save up to 750 tons of fuel per season with 2,400 tons fewer carbon emissions. There are 25 deck hatches which access the five cargo holds. She can contain up to 37,690 tons of cargo. Her self-unloading system is capable of discharging 5,450 tons per hour. She is powered by a single, MAN B&W 6S50ME-B9 6-cylinder, slow-speed diesel engine producing 11,897 BHP, driving a single controllable-pitch propeller. She has a service speed of 13.5 knots.
