Os portugueses dominavam a rota via Cabo da Boa Esperança, os espanhóis via Estreito de Magalhães. Os ingleses foram os primeiros a buscar uma nova rota, e sairam em várias expedições pelo Oceano Ártico. Este é um resumo de como surgiram as grandes explorações pela Passagem Noroeste, que é um caminho entre um conjunto de ilhas ao Norte do continente americano, no caso, acima do Canadá. Durante séculos esta passagem ficou fechada, e apenas em 1905 Roald Amunden conseguiu passar depois de três verões. Somente na década de 80 alguns barcos de cruzeiro começaram a navegar pela Passagem Noroeste durante o verão. Com o intuíto de fazermos um documentário sobre o impacto das mudanças climáticas no Oceano Ártico e na Calota Polar, o Igor Bely e eu velejamos em um barco sem motor, aberto no verão boreal de 2022. O resultado é um belíssimo documentário produzido pela Tocha Filmes.

For centuries, explorers tried to find a shorter route between Europe and Asia. The Portuguese dominated the route via the Cape of Good Hope, the Spanish via the Strait of Magellan. The English were the first to seek a new route, and set out on several expeditions across the Arctic Ocean. This is a summary of how the great explorations of the Northwest Passage came about, which is a route between a group of islands north of the American continent, in this case, above Canada. For centuries this passage was closed, and only in 1905 did Roald Amunden manage to pass after three summers. It was only in the 1980s that some cruise ships began to sail through the Northwest Passage during the summer. With the intention of making a documentary about the impact of climate change on the Arctic Ocean and the Polar Ice Cap, Igor Bely and I sailed in a boat without an engine, opened in the northern summer of 2022.
