Ingredients
• Banana flower (finely chopped) – 1 cup
• Toor dal (split pigeon peas) – ¾ cup
• Onion – 1 medium (finely chopped)
• Green chilies – 2–3 (slit)
• Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
• Red chili powder – 1 tsp (adjust to taste)
• Tamarind extract – 2 tbsp (optional)
• Salt – to taste
• Oil – 2 tbsp
For tempering:
Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, curry leaves, garlic (optional)
Preparation Method
1. Wash the toor dal and pressure cook it with turmeric until soft and mushy.
2. Cleaning the banana flower: Remove the outer purple layers, take the small florets, and remove the hard stigma and transparent petal from each floret. Chop finely and soak in buttermilk or diluted tamarind water to prevent bitterness and discoloration.
3. Heat oil in a pan and add the tempering ingredients. Let them splutter.
4. Add chopped onion and green chilies; sauté until onions turn soft.
5. Add the chopped banana flower and cook for a few minutes until slightly tender.
6. Add the cooked dal, salt, red chili powder, and tamarind extract. Mix well.
7. Add a little water if needed and simmer for 5–7 minutes until flavors combine.
8. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot.
