Dino Valenti, the lead singer of the rock group Quicksilver Messenger Service and the writer of the Youngbloods' hit "Get Together," died on Wednesday at his home, The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa reported. He was 51.

He had undergone brain surgery several years ago, but it was not known that he been ill recently, said his sister, Kay O'Gara.

Mr. Valenti, whose original name was Chester Powers, was born in Danbury, Conn. He first began performing in the folk clubs of New York City. After moving to San Francisco, he was a founding member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, which briefly became one of San Francisco's leading psychedelic bands of the late 1960's, along with the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane. Soon after the band began, Mr. Valenti was arrested on drug charges and eventually imprisoned; after his release, he pursued a solo career. He rejoined the band in 1970, and was prominent on its albums "What About Me" and "Just for Love." SOURCE: The New York Times
