The same Landsteiner and friends, who discovered the blood groups A, B, and O that we talked about in the previous video, decided in 1930s to do some experiments.
They took some blood from Rhesus macaque monkey and injected to rabbits.
The antibody made in rabbit could clump cells from rhesus monkey which made sense; however it also clumped red cells from 85% of humans.
They are called Rh positive, 15 % of all humans are Rh negative.
Importance of this discovery and Rh grouping and its genetic transmission was increasingly recognized in 1940s to 1960s.
Most significantly how an Rh negative mother can have Rh positive baby and can cause baby’s death before or soon after birth.
