On a super-hot day, at around midday, I decided to go and see the ancient Acropolis of Rhodes! Despite the heat I managed a nice little walk taking in the Temple of Apollo, the Amphitheatre, and the ancient Stadium. Due to the heat I rested in a few places in the shade, in particular the stadium; I wanted to sit in the stands and imagine what kind of person sat there over 2000 years ago, watching chariots race by, and the cheering from the crowds.
Top Tip - There is literally no room at the "Official" Entrance and Cafe, instead use the Lat and Long Coordinates (36.439° N, 28.209° E) to find the lesser used Car Park at the top of the hill, and go through the open gate to access the Acropolis.
02:25 - The Cavernous Sanctuary - where people would communicate with deities of nature, or nymphs.
04:04 - The Temple of Apollo Pythios, which was built after the earthquake of 226BC, and rediscovered by the Italian Archeaological Service during the occupation in 1938-1940.
06:18 - More cats! They seem to be everywhere!
08:03 - People admiring and taking pictures of the cats...
10:57 - a climb across the ruins in order to provide a view of the other side of the temple
15:33 - the top of the amphitheatre - an 800 seater "Odeon" that has been reconstructed, with the lowest few rows still original.
16:07 - Another cat in the shade :0)
17:39 - First view of the stadium - it is 210 metres long and was originally built around 300BC, and was restored by the Italians during their occupation.
20:09 - Sitting in the shade imagining chariot races
27:56 - Around the terrace to the end of the stadium - the turn.
33:20 - A first look at the Odeon.
34:52 - The top of the Odeon.
41:29 - A last look at the Temple of Apollo before heading back to the Car Park
