We go deep into the estimated costs behind the Chicago Teachers Union position to have more support staff and increase salaries for teachers and others.

To put these additional costs in perspective - we look at the comments by Mayor Lightfoot in her most recent Budget Address to the city, in which she notes the city has a CURRENT budget deficit of $838 Million, and that the city will incur an additional $600 Million in Pension costs over the next 3 years. That's WITHOUT any increase spending on Chicago Public Schools.

We look at the financial status of the city -- which is currently listing its bonds at JUNK STATUS, and note that the increasingly dismal financial condition of the city is in the context of one of the greatest national economies in the last 50 years.

The current good economy is not going to last forever. How will Chicago taxpayers afford to close the budget gap when a CPS settlement adds billions more over the next 5 years - if the city can't currently meet the costs of current spending.

While this is not an easy topic to digest, with all the competing financial data to keep in mind, we hope this segment lays out the perimeters of the financial costs and challenges faced by Chicago taxpayers.
