STORYLINE:
French socialist presidential candidate Anne Hidalgo cast her vote in Paris on Sunday in the first round of the country's presidential election.
The mayor of Paris is one of 12 candidates vying for the presidency.
Up to 48 million eligible voters are heading the polls.
President Emmanuel Macron is seeking a second five-year term, hoping to survive a challenge from the far right and nationwide voter apathy.
Unless a candidate gets more than half of the vote, there will be a second and decisive round on April 24.
Polls opened at 8am (0600GMT) Sunday and close from 7pm (1700 GMT) in most locations.
