On September 15, 1950, United Nations forces under the command of General Douglas MacArthur launched an amphibious assault at the port city of Inchon, behind North Korean lines. Executed against overwhelming logistical odds—including massive tidal swings, narrow channels, and fortified defenses—the landing succeeded in retaking Seoul and breaking the North Korean stranglehold on the southern peninsula.
General MacArthur, himself, called it a “5000-to-one gamble.”
Inchon was more than a tactical success; it was a strategic masterpiece that ignited real, if guarded, optimism. Ultimately, however, the amphibious landing would be the first of only a few unqualified victories in the state action we know as the Korean War. More than 1.8 million Americans served in the conflict that ultimately would be characterized by shifting front lines and brutal combat. With more than 4 million military and civilian casualties, it remains one of the deadliest conflicts in modern history.
Now, one of America’s most prominent military historians, John C. McManus, joins Jason Parker just days after the Inchon anniversary to explore the conflict in Korea. This is storytelling at its most thrilling, with dramatic tales of heroism and courage, victory and stalemate.
