Your dad, your auntie and BFF read everything you post but now you're wondering how to get attention from people outside of your circle. You are not alone.
In fact, one of the questions I'm asked most frequently is about attracting local and national publicity. After years of working in traditional and social media in a variety of capacities, I've come up with a few steps to follow.
Be Clear
Before making yourself available for interviews you have to be sure about who you are what will make you interesting to the media. You should be able to write it down in a sentence or two. For example: I'm Nikki Woods, the Global Visibility Expert. I show people how to create platforms and use them to enhance their brand and messaging and increase their presence in social and traditional media. Whether you're selling hot sauce out of your trunk or you manage hundreds of people from your corner office you need to be clear about the message you intend to send to the media.

Create a Platform
No media representative will take you seriously if you don't have either a website or a blog. These are vital platforms for achieving Global Visibility. Developing a platform that will attract your target audience gives you credibility and establishes you as a real player. It shouldn't be an afterthought but should have well-written content that is updated regularly.

Be Consistent
Once you're clear about your message to the media, be consistent. I suggest getting an online press kit. More than 90 percent of journalists, and other media decision makers as well prefer to get their information from the Web, and I am one of them! In my job as senior producer of a nationally syndicated radio show I ONLY read online press packages (after I google you!). Make sure yours includes pertinent information about you, your product, service or business. Your contact information should be CORRECT and easy to spot..
Be Ready
When you hear or read polished interviews that seem ad-libbed, don't think that responses are not well thought out, rehearsed and sometimes even prepared by someone else. Whether you practice a few sound bites on your own or hire a media coach and a writer, it's the end result that matters. The more interviews you do, the better you'll get at the process. You have to begin somewhere so accept as many offers and opportunities as you can. Being ready goes a long way to getting asked back for more interviews!
Ask Questions
Producers will be happy to help you make the interview go well. Feel free to ask them what colors you should wear if you're appearing on camera, how long the interview will last and the specific topic being discussed so you can prepare talking points.
Tell Them What You Bringfree-pr-6-better-ways-to-get-national-media
If you have a big social media following, not only are you getting free publicity from the person interviewing you, you become an asset to them too. Let them know without sounding pretentious, what you bring to the table. Remember, your goal is to get more than a one-time shot. If you pre-promote your appearance, print or online interview, post the finished project on your website and all the social media sites you use and blog about it, there's a very good chance that they'll seek you out again. I will tell you that your online influence will be a huge determinant for media decision makers, publishers and producers. When they Google you, there ought to be plenty out there for them to see.
Every time you do an interview, you're quoted in an article no matter how insignificant you may think it is, if it represents you well, it should be online. Your Global Visibility can't depend solely on what the media does for you. It's a two-way street and you win by learning to use social media to your advantage.
