We humbly offer this heartfelt tribute to Irene Stearns, who turned 100 years young on this day, January 30, 2022.
Irene Stearns is the last surviving of the “Kalamazoo Gals,” the unsung women who built Gibson guitars in Kalamazoo during WWII and who were, as novelist Jonathan Kellerman wrote in the foreword to the book Kalamazoo Gals (John Thomas, American History Press, 2013), “a band of intrepid, unpretentious, stunningly skillful, thoroughly American women” who made eminent contributions “to both the war effort and to the endurance of one of the greatest musical instrument manufacturers ever known.”
Thank you to the musicians around the globe who joined us in this celebration, the City of Kalamazoo, the Michigan Music Alliance, to Irene’s family, and, most importantly, to Irene, THE Kalamazoo Gal.
