Local authorities in Yakima are investigating incidents near a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement sub-office. According to the Department of Homeland Security, someone threw a rock through the office window while crews were responding to a fire behind the building. That fire started at a nearby homeless encampment and reached the edge of the ICE property. While both events happened close in time and location, the Yakima Fire Department says there’s currently no evidence linking them.
More than a dozen immigrants and advocates are calling on Washington State to declare a state of emergency. They’re urging action on housing issues for asylum seekers and federal immigrant detentions, asking for emergency protections to prevent evictions, rent hikes, and deportations without consent. The International Migrants Alliance warns that without immediate housing support, migrants remain vulnerable to further displacement.
And on a lighter note, NWPB is gearing up for some fun this weekend! We’ll be back at the National Lentil Festival in Pullman, Washington this Saturday. It’s a free, family-friendly event with live music, a beer garden, a lentil cook-off, and of course—the legendary giant bowl of lentil chili. Don’t miss NWPB in the Grand Parade, which returns to Main Street this year.
