A Step-by-Step Guide to Research in College

What is research like?
A first research experience is to get your feet wet in understanding how the principal investigator (PI) and graduate students answer very small questions that add to a bigger source of knowledge. And if you are on their research team long enough you might even be able to help in completing data analysis and interpretation. As you get more research experience, a PI might even ask you to join in on creating or implementing a new research project.

How does it benefit me?
Getting involved as an undergraduate in research is something that can be a huge benefit to your career even if you do not go out and become a researcher.

You can:
Get paid and/or earn independent research credits
Gain skills that you can use for your future career You learn how to be meticulous and organized.
Travel for sampling or presentations
Learn about different job opportunities you may not have ever considered
Stand out as an applicant for jobs and applying to grad school

How to get involved:
Check out your college website for research programs and opportunities
Talk to your professor or graduate instructor
Look at National REU programs
