In today’s garden video, I’m sharing my seed starting process for butterfly milkweed, swamp milkweed, and ironweed, along with bachelor buttons, lisianthus, stock, and larkspur. These plants cover everything from pollinator support to cut flower production, and I’ll walk you through their light needs, temperature requirements, and growing preferences so you can achieve strong, healthy seedlings.
🦋 Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa)
Thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. Germination occurs best at 70–85°F. Once established, it is drought tolerant and an essential plant for supporting monarch butterflies.
🦋 Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata)
Prefers full sun to partial shade with consistently moist soil. Best germination temperature is 65–75°F, making it great for early indoor seed starting.
🌿 Ironweed (Vernonia)
A native pollinator favorite that grows best in full sun, rich soil, and warm temperatures of 70–80°F for germination. Perfect for meadow gardens and native plant landscapes.
🌼 Bachelor Buttons (Centaurea cyanus)
Cool-season annuals that thrive in full sun and germinate best at 55–65°F. Excellent for early spring sowing and cut flower gardens.
🌸 Lisianthus (Eustoma grandiflorum)
A premium cut flower that prefers bright light, steady moisture, and cool germination temperatures of 65–70°F. Lisianthus is a slow grower, requiring patience, consistent warmth, and long light exposure for best results.
🌺 Stock (Matthiola incana)
A fragrant, cool-season flower that thrives in bright light and germinates best at 60–65°F, making it perfect for early spring or fall gardens.
🌾 Larkspur (Consolida ajacis)
A cool-season favorite that grows best in full sun, germinating in 50–60°F. Ideal for early sowing and cottage-style and cut flower gardens.
