The Duga radar station was a massive Soviet early-warning system designed to detect intercontinental ballistic missile launches from more than 4,000 kilometers away — far beyond the horizon. Located near Chernobyl, the installation was part of a secretive Cold War surveillance network. Its powerful signal produced a distinctive tapping sound on global radio frequencies, earning it the nickname “the Russian Woodpecker.”
