Yet within a decade of World War One, his kingdom had been carved up, Faisal was driven from Damascus, and Syria had been made into a French Mandate. So, why did France move so aggressively into the Levant? How did Hashemite ambitions collide with European imperial plans? And how did sectarian division become a tool of colonial rule?
