I wrote and composed a song that tells the story of Cronus, the formidable Titan king in Greek mythology, a symbol of time, power, fear, and fate.
Cronus’s tale is one of rise, prophecy, and inevitable downfall, echoing through the ages with timeless weight and tragic grandeur.Cronus was the youngest of the twelve original Titans, son of Uranus (the sky) and Gaia (the earth). He overthrew his father Uranus by castrating him with a sickle, becoming the ruler of the cosmos.Cronus swallowed each of his children at birth, fearing the prophecy that one of them would overthrow him.Zeus, his youngest son, escaped this fate and later forced Cronus to disgorge his siblings: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, and Poseidon. His rule marked the Golden Age, a time of peace, prosperity, and immortality for mortals. After being defeated in the Titanomachy, the great war between Titans and Olympians, Cronus was imprisoned in Tartarus or, in some versions, exiled to rule over the Islands of the Blessed.Cronus’s Roman counterpart is Saturn, who was also associated with time and the harvest. His name is linked to the Greek word "chronos," meaning time, although the two are distinct figures in mythology. In art, Cronus is often shown holding a sickle or scythe, symbols of both harvest and destruction. He represents the cycle of power, the fear of being replaced, and the unstoppable force of time.
Lyrics of the Song:
Verse 1
Before the gods, before the light,
I ruled the world in endless night.
I wore the crown, I held the blade,
A Titan King, my throne was made.
Pre-Chorus
Before the storm, before the flame,
I ruled the world, I carved my name.
With scythe in hand, I struck the sky,
And watched my father’s kingdom die.
Chorus
Oh, time is cruel, it turns on me,
Devouring sons to change destiny.
But one escaped, and now I fall,
A broken king, I’ve lost it all.
Verse 2
I cut the past, I ruled the tide,
But fate’s sharp teeth won’t leave my side.
No hymn of praise, no song of cheer,
Only the whispers of my fear.
Verse 3
I swallowed fate to hold my throne,
Yet Zeus would rise, my sins atone.
The golden age was torn apart,
And thunder struck my dying heart.
Chorus
Oh, time is cruel, it turns on me,
Devouring sons to change destiny.
But one escaped, and now I fall,
A broken king, I’ve lost it all.
Bridge
I ruled the sky, I ruled the seas,
The gods would bow, they’d fall to me.
With Rhea’s touch, the fire burned,
But fate had plans, the tides had turned.
Her lips like wine, her voice so sweet,
Yet shadows whispered at my feet.
A son would rise, the stars had said,
And steal the crown above my head.
Verse 4
Now Tartarus, my prison deep,
A hollow god, no throne to keep.
The echoes call, but none remain,
A fallen king, bound tight in chains.
Chorus
Oh, time is cruel, it turns on me,
Devouring sons to change destiny.
But one escaped, and now I fall,
A broken king, I’ve lost it all.
Outro
Now chains of dark hold me below,
In Tartarus, no winds will blow.
So hear my tale, but sing it low,
For even time must learn to go.
