All About ‘Megha’ Drinking Water Project in Karnataka
For generations, the people of Tumkur district have relied on groundwater for their daily needs. However, this precious resource has brought with it a silent threat - fluoride contamination, impacting the health of those who depend on it.
But, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon! The Pavagada Drinking Water Project, an ambitious endeavor of epic proportions, is set to change the lives of thousands.
MEIL is executing this biggest drinking water project in Karnataka, catering to the water needs of not one, not two, but three districts - Bellary, Tumkur, and Chitradurga.
The lifeblood of this project is the mighty Tungabhadra River, 230 km away from Pavagada, whose backwaters will be harnessed to quench the thirst of the region. What sets the Pavagada Drinking Water Project apart is its innovation. An astounding 90% of the water will be delivered through gravity canals, while the water pipeline network being laid is set to become the longest in the state.
As a part of this project, MEIL aims to provide clean drinking water to over 1140 residential areas, including two townships, bringing relief to drought-stricken districts. To achieve this, 579 overhead tanks will be constructed, ensuring that safe drinking water flows to every corner of the region.
Out of the 2,683 kilometers of pipeline planned in this project, MEIL has already laid an impressive 560 kilometers to date.
Once the pavagada Drinking water project gets completed, the people of Bellary, Tumkur, and Chitradurga districts will no longer need to worry about the quality and availability of their water supply.
