Jonbeel Mela is a unique and centuries-old festival held annually in mid-January near Jagiroad in Assam’s Morigaon district, organized primarily by the Tiwa tribe. Originating in the 15th century, the mela is renowned for its traditional barter system, where hill and plain communities exchange goods like rice, fish, turmeric, and forest produce without using money. The festival begins with a fire worship ritual and features community fishing, cultural performances, and a traditional durbar led by the Tiwa king (Gobha Raja), where symbolic taxes are collected and communal matters are discussed. More than just a trade fair, Jonbeel Mela fosters social harmony, cultural exchange, and the preservation of indigenous customs in Northeast India.
