Juvenile Appearance and Coloring

By around five years of age, they finally achieve the classic white head and tail, yellow bill, and bright yellow eyes. During this multi‑year process, the dark eyes lighten, the bill transitions from gray‑black to yellow, and the mottled body feathers slowly become more uniformly dark brown.

Time Spent With Their Parents

Young bald eagles remain in the nest for roughly 10–12 weeks, during which both parents provide food and protection. After fledging, juveniles typically stay in the vicinity of the nest for several more weeks as they learn to fly, hunt, and navigate their environment. During this period, the parents continue to feed them until they become fully independent. While they eventually disperse widely, juveniles may return to their natal area in later years, especially once they reach breeding age.
