On the day that Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games would open, I paid a visit to Carluke in South Lanarkshire, between Motherwell and Carstairs on the WCML in Scotland. The temperature on the day was 28 degrees C which got the Games off to a good start.
The lines through the station feature super elevations and switching curves running north on a downgrade and south on an upgrade. This results in some fast northbound running and plenty of effort as freight trains get to grips with the gradient.
For anyone who has not paid this station a visit I have tried to give a flavour of the kind of varied traffic that can be expected by including some EMU runs that I wouldn't normally include.
The first clip features two DBS class 66s heading north working 6s36 Dalston - Grangemouth empty tanks. This is normally a single 66 working but the second unit was DIT and unusually there were four containers tacked on to the end of the consist.
Next we see two WCR class 57s on 1z45 a Hereford - Dundee charter.
There then follow a variety of EMUs including classes 318 320 and 380.
Lastly we have the Hunterston to Sellafield nuclear flask run hauled by 37667 and 20302 making quite a sound as they powered up the gradient.
Finally, I must add my congratulations to all the home country teams who excelled themselves and provided great entertainment and enjoyment to all those who either visited the games or watched them on TV - a great follow on from London 2012.
Enjoy!
