Susie was YWCA Board President. During her tenure, she was a transformative leader, and led the way for our YWCA mission to include the imperative to eliminate racism in the early 1970s. She continued to volunteer with our YWCA for over 40 years.
Susie led the charge to create a new home for our YWCA in the late 80s after the City of San Jose forced the sale of our original building due to eminent domain. She was key in convincing the City to sell us a piece of land, and then linked us with a housing developer, and chaired the capital campaign to raise $3M that made it possible to construct the first two floors of our building on S. Third. Our housing development on Third is called the ‘Susie B. Wilson Residence’ in her honor, and each year we award a scholarship in her name at the Tribute to Women event.
