Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have created 3D-printed objects that can make decisions without any brain, batteries, or electronics - a concept they call "embodied logic." Inspired by the Venus flytrap, which snaps shut on prey without a nervous system, the team designed structures that react intelligently to environmental changes using only their materials and geometry.

These objects are built using bistable structures, meaning they can stay in two stable states like a light switch - on or off. When external stimuli such as humidity or chemicals trigger a change, the objects switch states automatically, performing tasks like opening, closing, or moving.

Through multi-material 3D printing, researchers combined materials with different reactions to create objects capable of logical behaviors - such as a box that opens in certain solvents or an artificial flytrap that snaps only under specific conditions.

This breakthrough could transform microfluidics, robotics, and space exploration, enabling sensors and devices that work for years without power or human control. Published in Nature Communications, the study shows that intelligence doesn't always need circuits - sometimes, matter itself can think.
