The refinery had Sulphur Recovery Unit (SRU) refractory challenges and it was rectified, refractory challenges had the potential to escalate into major operational disruptions. Any refractory failure could force an immediate shutdown of the SRU, and with the SRU shutdown, both intermediate and primary processing units would also need to halt operations.
A complete refinery shutdown of this scale could lead to financial losses exceeding ₹165 crores (approximately USD 18.2 million) per day, making early detection and preventive action of refractory healthiness critical.

To enhance monitoring and support safer operations, BPCL implemented one of the solutions provided by WIKA which was Linear Thermocouple System (Model TCC). This helps to continuously track refractory health inside the SRU Main Combustion Chamber. Through WIKA’s innovative TCC technology, BPCL strengthened the reliability of its SRU operations while minimizing operational and financial risks.
