The Australian Mist is a mixed breed cat–a cross between over 30 cat breeds that predominantly include the Burmese, Abyssinian, and Australian Shorthair breeds. Friendly, loving, and energetic, these cats inherited some of the best traits from all of their parents.

Australian Mists were originally known as Spotted Mist cats. You may find them in shelters and rescues, so remember to always adopt! Don’t shop if you’re looking to add one of these cats to your home.

The Australian Mist was bred by a feline who’s totally happy with always living indoors. They’re loving, tolerant, and make for ideal family pets. They can also adapt to just about any household size. Children and Australian Mists are a great mix.

1. Australian Mist's History.

The Australian Mist was originally developed back in 1977 by a doctor named Truda Straede. The intention behind the mixed breed was to develop a cat that would be content to stay indoors, along with having a mellow personality and easy-going nature.

These days, the Australian Mist has become honored as Australia's national cat. In 1998, the breed's name was changed from the Spotted Mist to the Australian Mist.

The Australian Mist was officially accepted as having gained championship status by the International Cat Association in 2014.

These days, you can find Australian Mists in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. So make sure to consider adoption if you decide that this is the breed for you.


2. Australian Mist's Appearance.

The overall appearance of Australian mist is the combination of half Burmese, and a quarter each of domestic shorthair and Abyssinian cats. They are of moderate size, composed of medium-sized bones, a round head with large eyes and ears. Six colors and two patterns are found among the Australian mist. Available colors are blue, brown, lilac, chocolate, gold, and peach. They are either spotted or marbled with the misty background. Legs are matched with the body coat and usually barred. Tails are ringed or barred, and nicely furred. The resemblance with Burmese and Abyssinian cats is often found among them. In fact, four of its original color comes from the Burmese ancestors.


3. Australian Mist's Size.

The Australian Mist is a medium-sized cat. As is always the case, exact size standards might vary.

Most Australian Mists weigh in at eight to 15 pounds. Female Australian Mists are often slightly smaller than their male counterparts. That said, many of these mixed breed cats can be smaller or larger than average.


4. Australian Mist's Personality.

When people talk about the personality of their Australian Mist cats, they usually say that they're mellow and tolerant kitties with an exceptionally loving side. These cats adore human interaction and attention, and will often follow you around or hop up on your lap at any opportunity.

As the Australian Mist was originally developed to be an indoor cat, they're pretty adaptable to most living situations. Nothing unusual is in their feed habit. They will never say any word against the usual cat meal available in the market. Because of their interests, they can touch or taste raw meat or milk. They don’t show any predator like activity. Other than that, you don’t have to worry about their dietary habit.


6. Australian Mist's Health Concerns.

Australian Mists are generally considered to be healthy cats; although, it's important to schedule regular wellness visits with your cat's vet.

Australian Mists are prone to gingivitis. Therefore, it's important to maintain their dental hygiene. This can include a good quality dry food or dental diet, dental chews or even brushing their teeth if they will let you. Regular veterinary dental checkups are a good idea as they may also require dental cleans, descale and polish under a general anesthetic.
