Newmont Q4 looked strong on the surface. The company generated massive free cash flow, posted solid earnings, and benefited from a powerful gold price environment. Financially, it was a very good quarter. So why did the stock drop during the call?

Because the forward outlook changed. Management guided to lower production in 2026, calling it a “trough” year, while also flagging higher costs ahead. On top of that, Newmont disclosed a notice of default tied to its Nevada Gold Mines joint venture, which represents a meaningful portion of output. So the market reacted not to the past quarter, but to declining production, rising costs, and new uncertainty. If gold keeps climbing, the cash flow machine likely continues. But investors are now focused on whether operational weakness and JV tension offset that strength.
