One of the most common questions in veterinary medicine is also one of the hardest to answer:
“Does this need to be checked… or can it wait?”
And the truth is — there isn’t always a clear-cut answer.
Pets vomit once….or they limp briefly….or they seem a little quieter or breathe a little faster.
Not just owners, even veterinary professionals sometimes debate these things, and it's because the context matters — the pet, their history, what else is going on, and how long it’s been happening.
Here’s what I want pet owners to know:
Calling or checking in isn’t a sign of panic — it’s how we can help make a decision together regarding what makes sense.
Sometimes the answer is, “let’s monitor this at home.”
Sometimes it’s, “let’s have them come in.”
As a general guideline, the times it’s worth calling sooner:
🚨 Vomiting more than once
🚨 Limping longer than 10 minutes
🚨 Breathing over 30 breaths per minute
🚨 Your gut says something’s off
You know your pet best and you will know when things seem off. If you’re unsure, reaching out helps us guide you — and that’s exactly what we’re here for. 💙🐾
I'm here to talk to you about these difficult subjects around veterinary medicine, and if you find this helpful, let me know what questions I can answer for you next!
