Landing out at Alsfeld.. Germany

Описание: 12-05-2012 I planned a 529Km cross country flight out of Saal Kreutzberg, a very nice airfield in the North of Bayern, Germany, near the mountain ranges of Rhon and Thuringer Wald. Only 25Km SE from the Birthplace of Gliding, the Wasserkuppe, where Oskar Ursinus organized in 1920 the first ever gliding competition!! At this first gliding competition, Wolf Hirth participated as a student and became later one of the very successful designers of the Shempp Hirth sailplanes.. My Mini Nimbus is also a Shempp Hirth design.

Well, the flight did not turned out as planned at all, I managed to make 119Km according the OLC, but it could have been way shorter then that, If I did not find a thermal at only 180m above ground at circuit entry for Huhnrain, a field only a few km downhill from the Wasserkuppe. (Later I learned this is the airfield famous glider manufacturer Alexander Schleicher uses as their home base to perform test flights).

After that save at Huhnrain I got up at 1400m again and for a while I picked up the pase again, but about an hour later I find myself in an area without any good thermals, dead clouds, cold air and blue sky with lots of sink holes..In a matter of minutes I lost 1000m and landed out at Alsfeld, somewhere between Marburg and Fulda, Hessen Germany.

So not as planned at all, but none the less a very interesting flight, which I enjoyed very much.
