The last video in the Treasure from the Museum video series welcomes back Kennards Hire 40 year veteran, Gareth Vines. This time Gareth talks ladder brackets.
Before any mechanical access equipment was available, we only had ladders to hire out to customers. And with the introduction of ladder brackets it made it easier for customers to get to those hard to reach spots.
Thankfully, using ladder brackets is now illegal, but this is how ladder brackets worked in the good old days.
A ladder bracket, made of metal was attached to the rung of a ladder, then a second bracket was attached to another ladder about three to four meters apart. Now, here's the crazy part…a trestle of wood was placed between the two ladders, resting on both brackets and you'd work standing on the wooden trestle often perched 30 feet or so up in the air!
Not the safest of practices but it's all they had…scissor lift anyone!
