Children of the Windrush Generation- Interview #1- Fitzroy Anderson

Описание: Fitzroy Anderson was born 1951 and lived in rural Jamaica with his aunt
after both of his parents left to find work in England in the late ‘50’s. By age 10, he was working the land and looking after the livestock when he was not at school.
While living with his aunt, he experienced colourism and was told not to
play with his lighter skinned siblings as he was considered ugly due to his darker skin tone.
Fitzroy came to England in October 1964 knowing nothing of England
apart from what his mother had told him – it was cold and dark.

Questions for discussion:
1. What do you understand about colourism?
-Why do you think it exists particularly amongst Caribbean people?
2. Why do you think Fitzroy describes London houses as soldier’s barracks?
3. What was Fitzroy’s experience of school like?
4. How did Fitzroy’s parents and other members of the community afford to buy houses?

Fresh Arts C.I.C produced an arts education project called Children of the Windrush Generation funded by The Windrush Day Fund. The project was the brainchild of our founder Davinia Khan whose father arrived from Jamaica aged 7 as a child of the Windrush Generation in 1964.

During this project, we recorded the seldom heard testimonials of 7 people who arrived in the UK as children. Most of our participants were based in Brent. We heard about their memories, experiences arriving in a new and strange land, time at school and teenage to adult years.

We then created and delivered drama and arts workshops in schools around London based on the oral histories we had recorded.

The stories were so rich and engaging that we would like to share them with the wider community. With each testimonial there are discussion questions to use if you are watching with young people.
