Structure and sound Strings: Sitars have between 18 and 21 strings, consisting of 5 to 7 main melody strings, 1 or 2 drone strings, and 10 to 13 sympathetic strings. Body: It has a hollow, pear-shaped body made from a gourd, with a long, wide neck. Frets: The main melody strings run over movable frets on the neck. Sound: The sympathetic strings vibrate on their own in response to the notes played on the main strings, creating a shimmering, complex harmonic sound.
