The outside leg sweep (O-Soto Gari) or basic school yard trip, is something that is taught in many styles early on as a basic mechanic but that practitioners then struggle with due to a few basic failures. In most cases, it turns into a huge struggle of muscular force rather than a refined movement. Here are a few keys to remember:
-As simple as it may seem, it can be catastrophically dangerous because it seeks to drive the subject's head into the ground. Therefore, they will resist with full vigor.
-Any throw or takedown should not be attempted before correct kuzushi or balance breaking has occurred. Constantly pull and push to test your grip validity and your subject's balance first in order to create the opening that you will fit into.
-If your subject is able to remove their leg before you sweep that is because you have failed to load their weight onto their foot. Remember to always seek to place the subjects weight onto a single foot before attempting any throw.
-If you continue to sweep a loaded leg, there is a higher chance of injuring the partner. If you wish to lessen the risk, shift the weight off as you sweep.
