The two goals of this episode is to guide students to take ownership throughout their transition process and guide teachers in the next steps to building a successful transition program.
First, it’s important to briefly recap Episode 111 that focused on the beginning steps. Past episode 111, highlighted the importance of making transition a priority, knowing your role as a Transition Teacher, scheduling time for Transition and finally involving the parents and the whole IEP team in the Transition process.
Students taking ownership allows for students to learn the following:
• Their role and responsibilities in their Transition process
• Students learn about their IEP
• Students learn to advocate for themselves
Students’ role involves focusing on student responsibility. However, student responsibilities are not clearly stated in the law, they are implied:
• Stated: Students are invited to their IEP meeting
• Implied: Students are “actively involved” or “lead” their IEP meeting
• Stated: School takes steps to ensure student’s preferences and interests are considered
• Implied: Students explore their wants, strengths, interests, and needs through many activities, assessments, and experiences in the areas of Employment, Training/Education, and Independent Living
• Implied: From their exploration, students write/contribute to their postsecondary goals
Next, student ownership involves recapping Episode 42, the Student’s Transition Responsibilities and being aware of the following:
• Identifying Post-Secondary Goals
• Active student participation in IEP Meetings
• Student accepts responsibility
In order for students to carry out their role/responsibilities in their transition process, they need to understand the IEP. Episode 106 covers the following:
• What does and IEP stand for?
• What does the IEP mean to them and why they need an IEP?
• How often they need to have an IEP?
• Expectations at an IEP meeting
• Preparing for the Transition IEP
In addition to understanding their IEP, students need to learn to advocate for themselves. Episode 14, allows for a brief recap of self-Advocacy skills that focuses on the following:
• Realistic view of self, open communication with self, understanding rights and responsibilities
