Born from the ashes of the Andrea Doria, the Leonardo da Vinci symbolized Italy’s postwar rebirth and its determination to reclaim a place among the great maritime nations. Built at the Ansaldo Shipyards in Genoa, her keel was laid in 1957, and from the beginning she was an ambitious project, not just a modern liner, but one designed to be converted to nuclear propulsion “at some future time,” a testament to the technological optimism of the Italian economic boom.

Launched in 1958 and entering service in June 1960, the Leonardo da Vinci was a showcase of innovation and Italian style. She featured Denny-Brown stabilizers, state-of-the-art fire detection and safety systems, and a split-engine room layout for enhanced redundancy. Her interiors, designed by Gustavo Pulitzer-Finali, Vincenza Monaco, and Amedeo Luccichenti, reflected the finest Italian design of the era — bright, functional, and elegant without excess.

Her maiden voyage began from Genoa on June 30, 1960. After calling at Cannes, Naples, and Gibraltar, she crossed the Atlantic in rough weather, performing superbly and proving her seaworthiness. Nine days later she arrived triumphantly in New York, greeted by cheering crowds and escorting tugs — a proud moment for Italy. That year, the Leonardo da Vinci carried more than 34,000 passengers, with an impressive 94% occupancy rate — a remarkable achievement just as jet travel was beginning to dominate transatlantic transportation.

Throughout the 1960s she served as the flagship of the Italian Line, operating the Genoa–New York express service alongside the Cristoforo Colombo. From 1962 onward she also undertook Mediterranean and Black Sea cruises, often lasting over forty days, which proved highly successful and profitable. These voyages anticipated the future of leisure cruising, long before the concept became an industry standard.

In the early 1970s, as Michelangelo and Raffaello joined the fleet, the Leonardo da Vinci found new life as a cruise ship, sailing in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe. Early financial results were encouraging — her cruises from American ports to the Bahamas and South America showed that the Italian Line could indeed succeed in the emerging cruise market.

However, the 1973 oil crisis and mounting political and managerial inefficiencies within Italy’s state-run shipping sector ended those hopes. After a brief charter to Italia Crociere Internazionali and Costa Line, the ship was withdrawn from service and laid up at La Spezia in 1978.

On July 3, 1980, tragedy struck. A fire broke out on board, spreading rapidly through the ship. Witnesses and investigators later reported that flames appeared to start simultaneously in multiple areas, fueling speculation of sabotage or arson. Despite the efforts of firefighters and naval crews, the blaze proved uncontrollable. Fearing an explosion from the fuel still aboard, authorities ordered the ship to be towed offshore and scuttled.

The charred remains of the Leonardo da Vinci were later raised and scrapped in 1982, ending the story of one of Italy’s last great ocean liners.

Today, the Leonardo da Vinci endures as a symbol of a vanished era — a time when Italian engineering, art, and ambition came together to create ships that were not only means of travel, but floating monuments to national pride and imagination.
