Major international developments on composite standards are underway in North America and Europe. Closer to home, the first joint Australian and New Zealand design standards for: steel and composite bridges (AS/NZS 5100.6); and composite buildings (AS/NZS 2327) have been published and are now cited in the Building Code together with the NCC in Australia. As Chair of the AS/NZS 5100.6 Committee and Member of the AS/NZS 2327 Committee, Stephen presented the major changes from previous New Zealand design practice. The challenges from introducing higher strength materials that are currently permitted by other international standards on composite construction were discussed, together with further enhancements that are currently being considered in future editions of these standards. The presentation covered:
• An introduction to composite construction.
• Design of composite beams and shear connectors.
• Design of composite slabs.
• Design of composite columns.
• Electronic design tools to support the use of AS/NZS 2327.
