Some cutting with the new longsword.
Mini review on the sword (Ronin Katana "Euro Model #3"):
The first impression you get when you look at or hold this sword is: "Wow, that's a big sword."
Although the blade is fairly standard longsword length, it stands out due to how wide it is at the base; just over 3 inches. The blade profile is classified as an Oakeshott Type XVIIIc, which is described as "A broad bladed Longsword with diamond cross sectioned blade terminating in an armor piercing tip. Similar to the Type XVIIIb but starting with a much wider, distinctive base. Relatively rare and somewhat specialized, was in use throughout most of the 15th century, though developed in the late 14th." The design is based on an antique originally found in the Mamluk arsenal in Alexandria, Egypt (https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collect...) and Ronin Katana is one of several manufacturers that make swords inspired by it.
Dubbed the 'Euro Model #3', this sword certainly has the same imposing look as the antique, but differs primarily in the hilt components. The crossguard and pommel are notably smaller and lighter than on the historical example. While I don't believe this detracts from the overall look of the weapon, it does certainly change its handling. The overall weight of the sword is fairly light at only 3 and a half pounds, but in the hand the balance is noticeably blade-heavy with the point-of-balance being nearly 8 inches from the crossguard. This forward balance means the sword cuts with authority, but recovery is fairly slow. The sword flows well through multi-cut combinations as long as you keep it moving, but delivering those cuts in quick succession is challenging.
The overall fit and finish of the sword is good, although it is more of a 'soldier grade' weapon than an officer's or collector's piece. The hilt is solidly constructed with no wobble or play whatsoever, the crossguard and pommel are well shaped and perfectly aligned with the blade. The grip wrap is comfortable with or without gloves, and the seam is unobtrusive. The blade itself is symmetrical to the eye, polished to a near mirror finish, and the central ridge of its diamond cross section is quite straight with nary a hint of waviness. The blade comes quite sharp with no visible secondary bevel. The sword also comes with a wood-core, leather-wrapped scabbard that fits the blade well, if a bit too snugly. Accompanying the scabbard is a leather belt and suspension system which is a bit fiddly for my taste with a few too many loops and straps, but it works well enough to wear the sword comfortably.
Overall the Ronin Katana 'Euro Model #3' is a great value for its $450 asking price. Although the performance of the sword suffers due to its undersized hilt components, its still a joy to swing and cuts great with the factory edge thanks to the excellent blade geometry. The inclusion of a scabbard and belt/suspension at this price point is just icing on the cake, and will allow me to use it as part of my Ren Faire costume later this year.
