5 Practices for Orchestrating Math Discussion: Anticipating and Monitoring Student Work

Описание: Continuing our discussion around the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions, we will dig into the first two practices: Anticipating and Monitoring.

Anticipating is like using a GPS to plan a trip. Where are the roads closed? Any accidents? Can I get through faster on a toll road? Why do we use GPSs? Although you cannot guarantee that you will not encounter an unexpected issue, you are the most prepared that you can be to get to your final destination. Similarly, if you anticipate strategies that students might use and misconceptions they might have, you will be as prepared as you can be to ensure success.

When you move from the pre-lesson phase to the lesson itself, you have to release control a bit. Things are happening live. And that includes what you anticipated and what you didn’t. However, note that monitoring is more than walking around the room. While walking, you need to pay close attention to the thinking and strategies that are taking place. You can do this by listening, watching and asking the students questions as you investigate what they are working on.
