When will the wind stop? I try to ride every day, no matter what, and wind has never been my friend. Despite the conditions, I ventured to the NJ Meadowlands in search of Jimmy Hoffa and the Sawmill Creek and Transco Trails. I Googled the trails last night because they’re visible from the NJ Turnpike and I was curious about them. It turns out that they're not too far from home.
The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority Meadowlands District is bordered by Route 46 on the north, Routes 1 and 9 and the freight lines owned by Norfolk Southern and CSX Corp on the east, the Port Authority of NY and NJ's Trans-Hudson (PATH) commuter rail lines and the Pulaski Skyway on the south, and Route 17, the Pascack Valley rail line and the Kingsland rail line on the west. Needless to say, the area is buzzing with activity. The NYC skyline can be seen easily from this area as well.
The trails are a diamond in the rough and are dotted with informational kiosks full of facts about nature and the history of the area. The Sawmill Creek Trail is a 1.2 mile-long mostly flat gravel trail located in Kearny and Lyndhurst. It connects to the Transco Trail and is part of the larger area featuring tidal mudflats, marsh, and wildlife. Access is through DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst. I ended up biking about five miles in the video. This one is worth a second trip.
