The Teatro Municipal General San Martín is a theater in the city of Buenos Aires located in the central Corrientes Avenue. It is one of the most important theaters in Argentina and offers places for the representation of scenic and cinematographic works, and different artistic exhibitions.
On May 23, 1944, the Municipal Theater of Buenos Aires was inaugurated in the same place for the promotion and diffusion of the Argentinean theater. In 1950, the theatre was renamed Teatro General San Martín (in homage to the 100th anniversary of the death of this hero). The company Benito Roggio e Hijos began to build the current building, designed by architects Mario Roberto Álvarez and Macedonio Ruiz, on June 24, 1954. The municipal mayor was the architect Jorge Sabaté, appointed by President Juan Domingo Perón.
The new San Martin Theater was finally inaugurated by the Mayor Hernan Giralt on May 25, 1960 (150th anniversary of the May Revolution), but it began to operate a year later. It became one of the most influential cultural centers in Latin America, since in the thirty thousand square meters distributed in thirteen floors and four basements, the building has three theaters, several exhibition halls and a cinema.
In 1962 the San Martín Cultural Center was projected towards Sarmiento Street, a set of two buildings interconnected with the theater, which was inaugurated in 1970. In 2000, the San Martín Theatre became the headquarters of the General and Artistic Direction of the Buenos Aires Theatre Complex.
