Third time's a charm, right? This is day three of figuring out how to build helicopters with the new DLC. Finally got to a place that I think could be tweaked for any atmosphere type. Takes forever to go down though- and sometimes freaks out for no particular reason... c'est la vie.
The basic concept is: set up two KALs, one for rotors/impellers, and one for blade pitch. The points should be set to coincide with that phase of flight: a point on the rotors for full torque well before the torque starts on the impellers: allowing hovering, and transition into forward flight. For the blades, the first point should create a very slight down thrust, followed very quickly by a point set to 0% (not how it's done in the video, so don't use my numbers). From zero, ramp up to a pitch that creates good lift. The next point should ramp down to a pitch that keeps you (almost) still in the air hovering. However- the trick is: once you start the impellers in the back and start moving forward, that hover point changes- so after your "still" hover point, create another one for "cruising" hover.
Don't forget that with both sets of rotors, you need one going clockwise and the other counter-clockwise. Hit F12 to pull up the aerodynamic overlay (it will screenshot if playing through Steam- but it's easy to change that) and check that the blades are deployed (I set them to that in the hanger) and in the correct direction. If one, or both, sets of blades are pointing down, invert them; and same for the impellers.
If you see where I've got them set at the end of the video- that's not finished yet. I've added some wheels and stuff since then, and have tried to improve my KAL setup; so take it for what it is: proof of concept.
I hope this helps!
