Ketone bodies are a form of energy used by the body when glucose (carbohydrates) in the blood is low, and fat becomes the primary fuel source. 

There are three types of ketones:

Acetone
Acetoacetate
Beta-Hydroxybutyrate
Ketone strips are used to test the urine for acetone and acetoacetate.

There are two ways to use the ketone test strips:

Directly urinate on the indicator on the test strip
Urinate into a cup, dip the ketone strip quickly in the urine.
