Carlo Gesualdo, other than famously being known for murdering his wife and her lover, wrote some absolutely groundbreaking music that went against the musical traditions of his time. His rapid modulations, free borrowing of different modes and extensive chromaticism blur any sense of tonality and wouldn't be seen again for another few hundred years before the likes of Strauss and Mahler in late Romanticism.
"Moro, lasso, al mio duolo" is a deeply expressive text literally about death and suffering, which lends itself perfectly to such morbidly sounding music. Gesualdo pulls out all the stops here, and we see surprising chromatic turns and plenty of false relations, creating one of his strangest masterpieces that continues to fascinate listeners of today.
