"Meißner 2020" - 2 test flights using an Ozone Roadster 3 and a Dudek Solo

The 752-m Mount Meißner is the highest mountain in northern Hesse. During the winter, traditional skiing and cross-country skiing is possible. Mount Meißner is also famous for its upland moors and its “smelly stones”, crevices that emanate sulphur dioxide from burning sub-surface coal deposits. On the peak of Mount Meißner, transmission towers of the public broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk are installed.


This video contains footage taken during two flights around Mount Meißner. The weather conditions were almost identical on both days. For the first flight, I used an Ozone Roadster 3 (26), and a Dudek Solo (24) for the second.



Both paragliders were provided by Flugschule Freeman flight school. Please note that I do not get paid for testing or mentioning any particular pieces of equipment.



As it turned out, both paragliders were equally fast; after 90 minutes, the time difference was only 3 minutes. My opinion of the paragliders was as follows:



Roadster 3:
• Perfect ground handling
• Easy take-off at low speed with fast climbing

• High resistance/sensitivity on the regular brakes; easily adjustable
• Low resistance on the TST system, easily adjustable and it doesn’t strain the hand too much, even on longer flights
• Paraglide will tolerate even strong thermal turbulence (+4.5 m/s to -4.9 m/s) without folding up, regardless of whether trimmers are activated or not
• Paraglide is agile on demand if you are not afraid of handling it firmly
• Paraglide will climb quickly in thermals• Landing is easy if the trimmers are deactivated due to the high sensitivity of the regular brakes


Solo:

• Tends to overshoot on take-off, so practice at bit
• Very low resistance/sensitivity on the regular brakes, so it doesn’t strain you too much even on longer flights.
• Low resistance on the TST system, easily adjustable, and it doesn’t strain the hand too much, even on longer flights
• Paraglide will behave as long as the trimmers are deactivated

• With activated trimmers, the paraglide will be very agile and up for any manoeuvres (after only 270° you can enter into a steep spiral and turn the paraglide on its nose. Might work even earlier, but I just wanted to test it, so I didn’t handle it too roughly.)
• Paraglide will climb quickly in thermals

• Landing is easy with deactivated trimmers, but it will take some practice since it’s not easy to manipulate the very insensitive brakes.


My verdict: Both paragliders work well. The Roadster 3 is easy to handle from the very beginning and ideal for longer distances. The Solo requires somewhat more advanced handling, you can play around up in the air and cut any corner tightly.

Der Meißner ist mit 752 m der höchste Berg in Nordhessen. Im Winter ist hier Skifahren, Alpin und Langlauf, möglich. Der Meißner ist außerdem bekannt für sein Hochmoor und seine „Stinksteine“, Felsspalten aus denen der Geruch von unterirdischen Schwefel-Kohle Bränden nach oben dringt. Auf dem Meißner aufgebaut sind Sendemasten des hessischen Rundfunks.



Dieses Video zeigt die Aufnahmen von zwei Flügen rund um den Meißner. Beide Flüge wurden bei fast exakt gleicher Wetterlage geflogen. Einmal mit einem Ozone Roadster 3 (26) und einmal mit einem Dudek Solo (24).



Die beiden Schirme hatte mir die Flugschule Freeman zur Verfügung gestellt. Bitte beachten: dies ist mein persönlicher Eindruck, ich bekomme weder Geld von einem Hersteller noch von der Flugschule.



Mit beiden Schirmen war ich letztlich gleich schnell, die Flugzeit unterschied sich nach ca. 1,5 h lediglich um 3 Minuten. Die Eindrücke der beiden Schirme konnte ich aufgrund der Textlänge nicht noch einmal hier auflisten. Bitte einfach im englischen Teil oben nachlesen.



Fazit für mich: Beide Schirme funktionieren gut. Der Roadster 3 geht von Anfang an und ist ein Schirm für Streckenbegeisterte. Der Solo ist eher etwas für Fortgeschrittene und zum Spielen in der Luft und er geht eng um die Ecken.
