Landour Bakehouse
In the 1800s, the baker was the heart of every rural community. When Victoria became queen in 1837, most of her people lived in the countryside and every parish would have had a communal oven or a bakehouse.
Landour was no different and from the early 1900s all of its electric residents, including military doctors and nursing sisters, British and American missionaries, Language school students and Woodstock parents and staff met at community center boo club, as well as other social gathering at the hillside. They often exchanged their international recipes and high-altitude baking tips with each other simply in passing conversation.
Little did they know these recipes would be used till this day by the community of Landour. The manuscripts of these recipes were updated, revised, published, and republished as the The Landour Cookbook, through 5 editions.
Landour Bakehouse pays tribute to the ingenuity and efforts of all these people. They have derived many of the bakery, desserts, and pudding recipes from the Landour Cookbook. The shop has been painstakingly restored to resemble an authentic 19th century kitchen where baked goods were made.
One can sip on a traditional steaming pot of tea and ponder about the history of this quaint little town, while enjoying the views overlooking the majestic snow peaks of the great Himalayan Ranges through the whispering pines that stand tall.
