What is IRS Notice CP90 - CP90 Notice - Why Did I Receive The CP90 IRS Notice?

Welcome back to the HoustonTax channel, where we break down important tax topics to help you understand the IRS and your finances. In this video, we're talking about IRS Notice CP90—what it means and why you might have received one.

If you've received a CP90 notice, the IRS is notifying you of its intent to seize your assets.

This includes levying your bank accounts, wages, or Social Security benefits if you don't pay your overdue taxes. The CP90 notice is a serious matter, so let's examine it.

First off, why did you receive this notice? The IRS sends out a CP90 when you've ignored previous tax bills or notices, and they haven’t received payment for overdue taxes. The CP90 is essentially a final warning before the IRS takes action to collect the debt.

It's important to note that this is not the first time they've reached out—it’s just the last step before more aggressive collection methods.
The notice itself will outline how much you owe in back taxes, penalties, and interest.

It also informs you that you have 30 days to either pay the balance in full or take action, like setting up a payment plan, to avoid asset seizure.
One key thing to remember is that the IRS can’t just start taking your assets the moment you receive this notice.

They give you 30 days to respond—so don't ignore it! This is your opportunity to resolve the situation before things escalate.
So, what can you do if you receive a CP90 notice? There are a few options. First, you can pay the full amount due if you're able.

If not, you can negotiate with the IRS to set up a payment plan or an offer in compromise, which allows you to settle your debt for less than the total amount owed.

If you believe the notice was sent in error, you can appeal the decision. The CP90 includes information on how to request an appeal through the IRS’s Collection Due Process (CDP) hearing.
