ABOUT ARTICLE 16:
Article 16 addresses a critical need for our community's solid waste management infrastructure. With recent studies indicating that Cell 3A, a lined landfill cell into which residuals from the composting operation are primarily placed, could reach its capacity by mid-2026, there is a need to expand the construction of a companion lined landfill cell, Cell 3B. This article supports the Select Board’s Strategic Plan Environmental Leadership Focus Area as it relates to implementing data-driven recommendations on island-wide solid waste management.
The proposal calls for an investment of $5,065,000. Funding is subject to a proposition 2 ½ debt exclusion vote under Question 6 on the Election Ballot.
What does this mean for the average homeowner? For those with a property valued at approximately $2M and eligible for a residential exemption, a 'yes' at Town Meeting and the Town Election will result in an annual tax bill increase of about $12.16 per year over the next 20 years.
This proposal is about ensuring that our community can continue to manage its waste responsibly, without compromising our environmental values.
